Smart Glass for the Bathroom

A bathroom asks two opposite things of the same pane of glass: daylight over the tub, above the vanity, inside the shower — and nobody able to see in. The traditional fixes pick a side and stay there: blinds warp and grow mildew above a tub, and etched glass dims the room permanently. Smart glass for bathroom windows and enclosures refuses to pick: clear when you want the light, an even milky frost a second after you flip a switch.

The right switchable product for each surface

The bathroom is the one room where different surfaces want different products. Same switchable PDLC technology, delivered two ways — clear with the power on, frosted with it off, one surface at a time or the whole room at once.

• Windows and skylights → smart film. These panes never take direct water — steam condenses, nothing sprays — so switchable smart film goes onto the room-side face of the glass you already have, cut to the pane and edge-sealed. No glazing order, no reframing.
• Shower doors and enclosure walls → sealed smart glass. Glass hit with water daily is where we steer you to laminated smart glass, the switchable layer sealed between two sheets: nothing on the surface for water to work at, and the panel doubles as safety glass. • Partitions, WC compartments, and tub screens → either. A divider screening the toilet from the vanity, or walling the bath off the bedroom, stays dry — film works, and so does a sealed panel if glazing is going in anyway.

Bathroom windows: daylight without the neighbor's view

This is the request we get most, and it's usually one window in the wrong place: over the tub, where the view is also the exposure, or high in a shower wall facing a side yard nobody uses — except when they do.

The retrofit is undramatic. We measure each pane, cut a switchable panel to it, and bond it to the room-side face of the existing glass, edges sealed. Two low-voltage leads leave the pane edge and vanish into the frame on the way to a concealed transformer. Powered on, the window looks like a window — 92% visible light transmittance. Powered off, it goes an even white across the pane. Privacy is the fail-safe state: no power, no view in.

Controls follow the room. A wall switch is the default, but stone surrounds are a real constraint — the Hermosa Beach bath below runs from a remote so nothing was cut into book-matched marble. Showers and wet areas

Glass that takes direct spray has its own page. The short version: for a shower door or an enclosure wall sprayed daily, we specify laminated glass with the switchable layer sealed inside, not film on the surface. A shower window, set back above the mixer, catches splash rather than a jet and is fine as film — Torrance and Tarzana below are exactly that. Night privacy, honestly

People search for one-way glass for bathroom windows and deserve a straight answer: this isn't that, and mirror film isn't either. Mirror film works only while one side is much brighter than the other, so it reverses after dark — exactly when you want the privacy.

Switchable frosted glass behaves the same in both directions at any hour, because it scatters light instead of reflecting it. At ten at night, lights on, window frosted: from outside the pane reads as a bright milky panel. Stand right against the glass and someone close outside sees a soft, shapeless silhouette — no features, nothing recognizable. Step back a foot or two and even that dissolves into the glow.

For most bathrooms that's the end of it. If yours is the exception — a ground-floor window feet from a shared walkway — the dark grey and black frost finishes read as far more opaque after dark.
