Smart Glass Cost: What You'll Actually Pay

A Smart View installer goes over the itemized estimate on a tablet with a homeowner beside a switchable smart-glass partition frosted for privacy

Quick answer: Smart film materials start at $35/sq ft plus $20/sq ft installation; laminated smart glass panels start at $100/sq ft. A single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed, with larger multi-window projects scaling up from there (Smart View, Los Angeles, 2026).

Smart glass cost comes down to three things: which product you choose, how many square feet you're covering, and what installation involves at your site. We're a Canoga Park fabricator selling direct, and we'd rather publish real numbers than make you call for everything. Here's the honest breakdown.

The base numbers

ItemPriceNotes
Smart film (materials)From $35/sq ftUltra Clear self-adhesive PDLC, custom-cut with factory-applied busbars
Smart film installationFrom $20/sq ftApplied, wired, and tested by our team
Busbar & wire connections$100 per windowThe copper connections that power each panel
Smart glass panels (materials)From $100/sq ftLaminated switchable panels; exact price needs your dimensions, thickness, and glass structure
Transformers$210–$636 per circuitOne per switching zone; includes receiver and remote — see the full lineup
Installation (glass)Quoted after measuringDepends on access, wiring, and panel count — see below

A single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed, and multi-window projects scale up from there. Commercial projects vary with scope; bulk pricing applies on larger jobs. Every install is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty, plus the manufacturer's film and glass warranties.

A real example, line by line

This is an actual recent residential estimate (two large windows, 61 sq ft total):

Line itemQtyPriceAmount
Smart film, Ultra Clear White (per sq ft)61$35.00$2,135.00
Installation (per sq ft)61$20.00$1,220.00
Busbar & wire connections (per window)2$100.00$200.00
30W transformer, incl. receiver & remote2$210.00$420.00
Subtotal$3,975.00

Plus sales tax — and that's the whole number. No "call for pricing," no surprise line items at install.

What actually drives the cost

Four factors move the final number more than anything else:

  1. Total square footage and panel count. More glass means more material, but per-square-foot pricing improves on volume.
  2. Access and wiring. Concealed wiring runs inside frames or wall cavities add labor; surface-mounted runs are faster. Hard-to-reach glass (high panels, tight enclosures) takes more install time.
  3. Electrical and transformer zones. Each independently switched zone needs its own transformer circuit. One switch for five windows costs less than five switches for five windows.
  4. Automation integration. A wall switch is the lowest-cost control. Remotes, app control, and integration with Lutron, Savant, Crestron, Control4, or voice assistants add hardware and configuration time.

Smart film vs. smart glass: cost comparison

FactorSmart FilmSmart Glass
MaterialsFrom $35/sq ftFrom $100/sq ft
Uses your existing glassYes — biggest cost saverNo — new fabricated panels
Install scopeSurface application + wiring, often one dayGlazing work; panels replace or supplement existing glass
Typical fitRetrofits, rentals, budget-conscious projectsNew construction, showers, exterior IGU

If your glass is staying, smart film is almost always the lower-cost path. If you're building or replacing glazing anyway, smart glass folds into the construction budget. For what installation involves in our area, see smart film installation in Los Angeles.

Why we quote after measuring

Some companies advertise a teaser price per square foot and let the "extras" surprise you later. We don't. Material prices above are real, but installation depends on your site -- so we work from your photos and dimensions (or measure on site for larger projects), then quote a complete number covering materials, busbars, transformer, wiring, and labor. The price you sign is the price you pay.

Two ways to get your free estimate:

  • Photos + rough measurements -- fastest. Estimate within 2 business days.
  • Detailed measurements with glass specs -- required for laminated or IGU smart glass quotes.

We also fabricate and ship smart film systems nationwide. If you're outside the LA region, the material-only path works -- we cut, apply busbars, test, and ship, and your local glazier or electrician installs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does smart film cost?
Smart film materials start at $35 per square foot, custom-cut with factory-applied busbars. Installation is priced separately based on a site survey, since wiring access and panel count change the labor involved. A single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed, with larger multi-window projects scaling up from there.
How much does smart glass cost?
Laminated smart glass panels start at $100 per square foot for materials, with the final number depending on dimensions, glass thickness, and configuration (tempered, laminated, or IGU). Installation is quoted after we review your glazing specs or visit the site.
Why won't you quote a final price over the phone?
Because the honest answer depends on measurements. Square footage, wiring access, transformer zones, and control systems all move the number. We give free estimates from photos and rough measurements within two business days -- but a final quote follows a site survey, so the price you sign is the price you pay.
What add-ons should I budget for?
Transformers run $210 to $636 per circuit depending on wattage, and include the receiver and remote; one transformer drives each zone of panels. Smart-home integration (Lutron, Savant, Crestron, Control4, Alexa, Google Home) adds hardware and labor depending on your setup. We itemize all of it in the quote -- no surprises at install.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. Send photos and rough measurements through our contact page or call (866) 728-9888, and we'll send a free written estimate within two business days.
