Why showers are where smart glass beats smart film

The same switchable PDLC technology comes two ways — as a smart film applied onto existing glass, or as smart glass, where the switchable layer is laminated and sealed permanently inside the panel. For most rooms either works. For a shower, the difference matters:

• Sealed against moisture — the PDLC layer is laminated between two sheets of glass, so steam and direct shower spray never reach it. There's no surface-applied film for water to work at over time.
• Laminated safety glass — if the panel ever breaks, it holds together instead of shattering, meeting common safety-glazing requirements for shower enclosures.
• Easy to clean — it wipes down like any glass shower door, because that's exactly what it is. No film edge, no special care.

A shower enclosure with privacy glass you control

Switchable privacy glass shower doors look like any frameless door until you need them not to. One switch, and the door and its fixed panels go from clear to an even frosted white together; switch again and the enclosure is open and bright. In the laminated build there is no film edge for spray to work at and no curtain to wash, because the privacy is sealed inside the glass itself. Each panel is laminated to your exact enclosure dimensions at our Canoga Park facility, with the switchable layer and busbars sealed inside the glass. Two low-voltage leads run from the panel to a transformer mounted safely outside the wet zone. Power on, the glass is clear; power off, it's frosted and private — privacy is the fail-safe state any time the power's off. You control it from a wall switch, wireless remote, app, timer, or voice through Alexa and Google Home.

Shower glass that turns opaque, on demand

"Shower glass that turns opaque" is the plain-English description of what this is, and it's an accurate one: a single enclosure with two states. Powered on, the panel is ordinary clear glass and the bathroom keeps the openness and daylight a glass shower was built for. Powered off, the whole panel goes evenly opaque — not a pattern, not a gradient, and not something a silhouette shows through. The change takes under a second, and because opaque is the unpowered state, a power cut leaves your shower private rather than clear.

The two questions we get asked about it:

• How opaque is opaque? Fully. The frosted state is a solid, even white right across the panel — no clear patches at the edges, no outline of the person behind it. It still passes daylight, so the shower doesn't go dark the way a solid wall or a drawn curtain does.
• Can part of it stay clear? Not by dimming, but by zoning. A multi-panel enclosure can be wired so the door turns opaque while a return panel facing a window stays clear, each on its own switch.

Laminated panel materials start at $100 per square foot, each switching zone needs a transformer ($210 to $636 per circuit), and installation is quoted after we review the enclosure measurements.
