Smart Glass Shower Doors

A shower enclosure that's open and bright when you want it, and fully private the moment you switch it off — with the switchable layer sealed permanently inside the glass, where shower spray can never reach it.

A glass shower enclosure makes a bathroom feel open and twice as large — until you actually need privacy, and a clear glass box is the last thing you want. Curtains get moldy, etched or rain glass is permanent, and a frosted enclosure is private but always dim. Smart glass shower doors solve all three: crystal-clear and open by default, switched to a completely private frosted enclosure in under a second, and back to clear when you're done.

Why showers are where smart glass beats smart film

The same switchable PDLC technology comes two ways — as a smart film applied onto existing glass, or as smart glass, where the switchable layer is laminated and sealed permanently inside the panel. For most rooms either works. For a shower, the difference matters:

  • Sealed against moisture — the PDLC layer is laminated between two sheets of glass, so steam and direct shower spray never reach it. There's no surface-applied film for water to work at over time.
  • Laminated safety glass — if the panel ever breaks, it holds together instead of shattering, meeting common safety-glazing requirements for shower enclosures.
  • Easy to clean — it wipes down like any glass shower door, because that's exactly what it is. No film edge, no special care.

If you're choosing for a wet area that takes direct spray, the sealed glass panel is the right call. (Bathroom windows and partitions that stay dry are a fine job for film — see smart film for windows.)

How a smart glass shower enclosure works

Each panel is laminated to your exact enclosure dimensions at our Canoga Park facility, with the switchable layer and busbars sealed inside the glass. Two low-voltage leads run from the panel to a transformer mounted safely outside the wet zone. Power on, the glass is clear; power off, it's frosted and private — privacy is the fail-safe state any time the power's off. You control it from a wall switch, wireless remote, app, timer, or voice through Alexa and Google Home.

Where it fits

  • Master and ensuite showers — open and bright for everyday use, private on demand when the bathroom is shared.
  • Walk-in and wet-room enclosures — a full glass surround that turns private without curtains or a solid wall.
  • Guest baths and hotel suites — a single switch turns a transparent enclosure into a private one.
  • Freestanding tub screens and partitions — the same switchable glass for any wet-area divider.

Installation and what it costs

We fabricate the laminated panels to size, install across the Los Angeles metro with our own team, and ship ready-to-install glass nationwide for your glazier and electrician. Wiring is always handled to code, with the transformer kept clear of the wet zone.

Pricing depends on enclosure size, glass configuration, and controls — a small switchable panel starts around $1,500 fully installed and scales up with the size of the enclosure. The honest breakdown is on our smart glass cost page.

Frequently asked questions

Can smart glass really go in a shower?
Yes — this is the application where smart glass clearly beats smart film. The PDLC switchable layer is laminated and sealed between two sheets of glass, so water and steam never reach it. A shower enclosure is exactly where you want the sealed glass panel, not surface-applied film.
Why not use smart film on a shower door instead?
Smart film is applied to the surface of existing glass, so direct, repeated shower spray can eventually work at its edges. For wet areas that take direct water, we recommend laminated smart glass, where the switchable layer is sealed inside the panel. Film is the right choice for bathroom windows and partitions that don't take direct spray.
Is smart glass safe and code-compliant for a shower enclosure?
Yes. Because the panel is laminated, it behaves like standard laminated safety glass — if broken, it holds together rather than shattering, which satisfies common safety-glazing requirements for bath and shower enclosures.
How is the shower glass powered safely near water?
The glass runs on low-voltage power (48–65V AC) from a transformer mounted safely outside the wet zone, wired by a licensed electrician to code. You switch clear to frosted from a wall switch, remote, app, or voice — no exposed line voltage at the enclosure.
Does the frosted shower glass still let light through?
Yes. In its frosted state the glass scatters the view for full privacy but still passes daylight, so the shower stays bright instead of going dark like a solid wall or a closed curtain.
