Smart film turns the glass you already have into switchable privacy glass — clear when powered, frosted and private when off, in under a quarter second. The film is the easy part. Getting it on perfectly is the hard part — and it's the whole job.
Smart film installation, step by step
Smart film installation follows the same five steps on every job. We measure each pane to the millimeter and map the power path. Each panel is cut to your glass and switch-tested at our Canoga Park facility before it leaves. On site, we prep the glass dust-free, apply the film dead flat with no trapped air, then run concealed low-voltage wiring to a hidden transformer and test every control. Most homes are done in a day.
How long does a PDLC smart film install take?
A PDLC smart film install on three to five home windows usually takes one day; larger homes with ten or more panels take two to three days, and commercial projects covering several conference rooms or a whole floor take one to two weeks, depending on electrical coordination and building access. Our own crew handles every Los Angeles install from Canoga Park, with each panel cut and switch-tested before install day, so the on-site work is prep, application, wiring, and testing.

Smart film installation questions, answered
Do I have to replace my windows?
No. Smart film is applied to the interior surface of your existing glass — no demolition, no frame changes — and it can be professionally removed later without damaging the glass.
Can smart film be removed later without damaging the glass?
Yes. PDLC smart film is applied with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that can be professionally removed without scratching, etching, or permanently altering the glass. That makes it well-suited to renters, tenants on commercial leases, and anyone who may want to change the setup later. Removal typically takes less time than the original installation.
Can smart film go on double-pane windows?
Yes. The film bonds to the room-side surface of the inner pane, so a sealed double-pane unit stays sealed and nothing is replaced; the window keeps its seal, frame and insulation. Textured or previously tinted glass changes the answer, so send photos first. How sealed units differ is covered in double-glazed smart glass.
Can smart film go on curved glass?
Not on glass that is actually bent. Film has to bond flat to a smooth pane, so curved or bowed glass cannot take it without creasing and lifting at the edges. Flat glass with a curved outline is different: arches, circles and half-moon transoms are cut to shape routinely. For bent glass, the route is a made-to-order laminated switchable panel.
Can smart film be cut to size?
Yes. Every piece is made to measure, cut to the opening's exact dimensions (arches and circles included), then wired and sealed before install day. Two limits: a finished piece can't be trimmed on site, and a single sheet has a maximum width, so wider glass takes two pieces joined on a mullion. Do you need an electrician to install smart film?
Usually not for a retrofit. Our licensed crew applies the film, mounts the transformer, and runs and conceals the low-voltage wiring to the glass and the switch; a standard outlet near the transformer is typically all the building needs. Where the transformer needs a new circuit, your electrician or general contractor provides that power. Sizing is explained in what size transformer your smart film needs.
Can I install smart film myself?
We don't recommend it. Switchable PDLC film is far less forgiving than ordinary window tint — trapped bubbles, dust under the film, an imprecise cut, or a wiring mistake are permanent and very common on a first attempt, and a creased film can't be re-applied. That's why we install with our own trained crew across LA, and supply material-only film orders to licensed contractors and trade installers rather than for DIY.
Smart film is unforgiving
Switchable film isn’t a sticker. It’s a precision-cut PDLC laminate with conductive layers and busbars that carry the switching current. It has to bond perfectly flat to the glass — no trapped air, no dust, no stretch — then wire to a low-voltage supply.
Get any of it wrong and the flaw is permanent. You can’t push a bubble out of switchable film the way you might with basic window tint — a single speck of dust or pocket of air is locked in for good.
