Smart Film, Explained Simply

Smart film is a thin switchable layer applied to the glass you already have — clear when it's powered on, frosted and private when it's off, in under a second.

What is smart film?

Smart film — also called smart window film, switchable window film, or switchable glass tint — is the fastest way to get switchable privacy glass: a thin layer applied to the glass you already have. Powered on, your window is clear. Powered off, it's frosted — private in under a second. No demolition, no window replacement, and in most homes, installed in a day.

If smart glass is something you build in, smart film is something you add on. Here's the plain-language version.

Smart film is a stack of thin layers — the switchable liquid-crystal (LC + polymer) layer does the work.

How smart film works

The film holds microscopic liquid crystals between two transparent conductive layers. A small transformer feeds it low-voltage power:

  • Power on — the crystals align, and the film turns clear. Your glass looks like glass.
  • Power off — the crystals scatter light, and the film turns frosted white. Nobody sees in or out, but daylight still comes through.

Privacy is the default: any time the power is off, the film is frosted. You control it from a wall switch, remote, app, or voice assistant. The deeper technical detail — voltage, UV block, busbars, fabrication — is on our how smart glass works page.

Why retrofit beats replacement (for most spaces)

Most privacy problems involve glass that's otherwise perfectly good: a bathroom window facing the neighbors, a glass-walled office, a street-level storefront. Replacing that glass with switchable panels works, but it's a construction project. Smart film solves the same problem on the existing glass:

  • Installed in place — a typical home project finishes in one day.
  • No structural work — frames, seals, and glazing stay untouched.
  • Removable — the film comes off professionally without damaging the glass, which makes it realistic for renters and commercial tenants.
  • Bonus benefits in both states — it blocks 99%+ of UV and reduces solar heat gain, so furniture fades slower and sun-blasted rooms run cooler.

Where smart film shines

  • Bathroom windows — privacy on demand, no soggy blinds.
  • Bedrooms and street-facing windows — frost at night, clear all day.
  • Home offices — a private video-call backdrop at the flip of a switch.
  • Conference rooms and partitions — open-plan offices that can still hold a private meeting (see smart glass for offices).
  • Storefronts and medical offices — after-hours screening, patient privacy, even rear-projection displays on the frosted film.

Smart film colors

The frosted (powered-off) state isn't only white. We stock five finishes, so the privacy look matches your glass and your design — from a soft milky white to a deep, near-opaque double black.

WhiteClassic milky frost
Light GreySoft, neutral haze
Dark GreyDeeper, modern tone
Single BlackDark charcoal privacy
Double BlackDeepest, most opaque

Not sure which finish suits your space? We'll bring samples to the site visit so you can see each one against your own glass and light.

Film or glass: which one is yours?

The honest rule of thumb:

  • Your glass is staying → smart film. Lower cost, faster install, removable.
  • You're building or replacing glazing anyway → smart glass panels, where the switchable layer is sealed inside the glass. Better for showers, exteriors, and new construction.

Both are covered side by side, with numbers, on our smart glass cost page.

Done locally, shipped nationally

We custom-cut every film panel at our Canoga Park facility with the electrical connections factory-applied and tested. Our own team installs throughout the Los Angeles metro — the full process is on the smart film installation in Los Angeles page — and we ship ready-to-install panels anywhere in the United States for local installers. Frequently asked questions

What is smart film in simple terms?
Smart film is a thin switchable layer applied to glass you already have. Powered on, it's clear; powered off, it's frosted and private. It turns ordinary windows, partitions, and glass doors into switchable privacy glass without replacing anything.
Is smart film the same as smart window film?
Yes. Smart window film, switchable window film, switchable glass tint, and smart film all describe the same product — a switchable PDLC layer applied to your existing window glass that turns from clear to frosted on demand.
Do I have to replace my windows to get smart film?
No -- that's the point. Smart film is applied to the interior surface of your existing glass. Most residential projects (3-5 windows) are installed in a single day, with the wiring concealed in the frame or wall.
Does smart film work on any glass?
It works on most smooth, flat glass: windows, sliding doors, partitions, transoms, and storefronts. Heavily textured or curved glass needs evaluation first. Send us photos and we'll tell you honestly whether your glass is a good candidate.
Can smart film go in a bathroom or near a shower?
Yes for bathroom windows and partitions, sealed at the edges against moisture. For glass that takes direct shower spray we recommend laminated smart glass instead, since its switchable layer is sealed inside the glass.
Can I take smart film with me if I move or my lease ends?
The film can be professionally removed without damaging the glass, which keeps landlords happy. Removal and reinstallation in a new space is possible but panels are cut to specific glass dimensions, so a new space usually means new panels.
How much does smart film cost?
Materials start at $35/sq ft, custom-cut to your glass, plus installation, which depends on wiring access and panel count. Larger multi-window projects scale up from there. The full breakdown is on our pricing page.
