Smart Film vs Smart Glass: Which One Do You Need?

The smart film vs smart glass choice comes down to one question: is your glass staying? Smart film (PDLC smart film) is a switchable layer bonded onto the glass you already have, a retrofit from about $35/sq ft in materials plus about $20/sq ft to install, so a single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed. Smart glass is that same layer laminated inside a new glass panel or insulated unit, from about $100/sq ft in materials and made to order. Both frost and clear the same way. Glass is the one you need for a shower door that takes direct spray, new exterior windows built as insulated units, or new construction where the glass is being ordered anyway.
Everything else, from the look to the controls, is closer than most people expect. Here is the full side-by-side, the question we get most about laminated panels, and which route fits each kind of opening.
What is the difference between smart film and smart glass?
| Smart film | Smart glass | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A thin switchable layer with an adhesive back, cut to each pane | The same switchable layer laminated between two sheets of glass at the factory |
| Where it goes | The interior face of existing windows, doors, and partitions | New openings, replacement glazing, shower enclosures, exterior insulated units |
| Your existing glass | Stays; the film goes onto it | Replaced, or a new opening is glazed with the panel |
| Cost | From $35/sq ft materials + $20/sq ft install; a small window usually starts around $1,500 installed | From $100/sq ft materials; installation quoted after measuring |
| Lead time | Cut to size from your measurements; on site, often one day | Made to order; lead time depends on the build and comes in writing with your quote |
| Look when frosted | Flat, even milky white; a thin busbar runs along one edge, usually hidden by trim | The same milky white; the electrical edge is sealed inside the laminate |
| Durability and wet areas | Quality film lasts well over ten years indoors; fine for bathroom windows, not for glass that takes daily spray | Sealed against moisture by construction, which is why it is the build for showers and exterior glazing |
| Thermal | No certified thermal rating; manufacturer spec sheets available | Can be built as a double-glazed insulated unit; certified NFRC ratings apply only to our smart glass picture window line |
| Controls | Wall switch, remote, app, voice, or Lutron, Crestron, Savant, Control4 | Identical |
| Best for | Good glass that is staying: bathroom windows, front doors, office partitions | New builds, remodels already reglazing, showers, exterior insulated units, frameless glass walls |
Laminated switchable glass vs retrofit smart film
Laminated switchable glass is a finished panel: the switchable layer sits between two sheets of glass, bonded under heat and pressure, so the panel arrives sealed and a glazier sets it like any laminated unit. Retrofit smart film is the same layer with an adhesive back, applied on site to the inside face of glass that is already installed. The optics match: same frost, same switching speed, same controls. The differences are practical. Film costs less and needs no reglazing. The laminated panel costs more and needs a new opening or replacement, but it seals the layer against moisture and hides the edge wiring, which matters in showers, outside walls, and frameless glass.
How is each one installed?
A film retrofit is interior work. The installer cleans and preps each pane, applies film cut to that pane's exact size, and runs a low-voltage connection to a transformer. The frame, the trim, and the outside of the house stay untouched. Surface prep takes more time than the application itself, because dust or caulk near an edge is what causes problems later. What the process looks like start to finish is on our smart film for existing windows guide.
A laminated panel is glazing work. The panel is fabricated to your measured size, the old glass comes out (or the new opening is framed), and the panel is set and wired. For exterior openings the laminate becomes the inner pane of a sealed insulated unit; how that build works is covered in double-glazed smart glass insulated units. Because the glass is made for your opening, the order needs detailed measurements and glass specs before fabrication starts.
How much more does smart glass cost than smart film?
Per square foot, smart film materials start around a third of the price of laminated panels: $35 against $100. Film installation adds about $20/sq ft, and every switching zone needs a transformer, $210 to $636 per circuit with the receiver and remote included. A two-window film job we priced line by line came to $3,975 plus tax for 61 sq ft, and that breakdown is on the smart glass cost page.
Panels look expensive next to film only when the glass would otherwise stay. On a new build or a remodel that is already ordering glass, you would be paying for a pane either way, so the comparison is a switchable panel against a plain one, not against film. That is when laminated smart glass panels earn their price. Glass installation is quoted after measuring, since access, wiring, and panel count all move the number.
Which one does your project need?
- Bathroom window: film, in most cases. The window is usually outside the spray and the glass is fine, so retrofitting it is the lower-cost path.
- Shower door or enclosure: glass. Anything that takes daily direct spray gets a sealed laminated panel; see smart glass shower doors.
- Office partition: film if the glass walls are staying; glass if the partitions are new or frameless and the edge will be seen up close.
- Front door: film. It goes onto the existing door glass, behind any grille or leading, and the door opens and locks as before.
- Exterior picture window: film if you are keeping the window; a smart glass insulated unit if the window is being replaced, and our certified picture-window line if you need published thermal ratings.
- Storefront: film on the inside face of existing storefront glass; insulated smart glass units when the storefront is being reglazed or built new.

Two real jobs, one of each
Film, on the glass that was already there. A Newport Beach master bath had a nine-lite black steel window wall behind a freestanding tub, a few feet from the neighbors' upper floor. We applied 102 sq ft of switchable film to the existing lites, each piece cut to its own pane and all nine wired to switch together from one handheld remote. No new window unit, no reglazing, two days on site. The full write-up is our smart glass bathroom window in Newport Beach.
Glass, where the panel is the product. In a West Hollywood bathroom, an interior window above the tub borrows daylight from the bedroom. That opening got a single 17 sq ft smart glass panel with the switchable layer laminated inside, set in the marble reveal and run from one wall switch. It sits directly above the tub and lives in steam, which is the case for a sealed panel over film.

Can you mix smart film and smart glass on one project?
On a single room the choice is usually obvious. On a whole house or an office floor, it often splits: film on the rooms whose glass is staying, laminated panels where glass is new or wet. Both run on the same kind of transformer and control options, so the building keeps one switch standard throughout. The smart film and smart glass pages go deeper on each product's specs.
Common questions
Is smart film as good as smart glass?
For switching, yes. Both use the same layer, frost to the same milky white, and switch at the same speed with the same controls. Smart glass wins where the edge will be seen up close or the glass gets wet, because the layer and its wiring are sealed inside the laminate.
Can smart film go on a shower door?
Not on glass that takes daily direct spray. A shower door or enclosure gets a sealed laminated smart glass panel instead. A bathroom or shower window outside the spray zone can take film.
Which lasts longer?
Quality smart film with a professional install lasts well over ten years; cheap kits often fail within 12 to 24 months. A laminated panel seals the layer inside the glass, which gives it the edge in wet and exterior locations. Every install carries our 1-year workmanship warranty plus the manufacturer's warranty. More on that in how long PDLC smart film lasts.
Can I start with film and switch to glass later?
Yes. Film is applied to the inside face of the glass and can be stripped without replacing the window. If you reglaze later, the new pane can be a laminated smart glass panel, and the controls work the same way.
