Switchable privacy for paned doors

Smart Glass French Doors

French doors are almost entirely glass — that's why the light travels and why the room behind them has nowhere to hide. Switchable glass keeps the doors exactly as they look and adds a private setting you can turn on in under a second.

Illustration: a pair of French doors viewed from inside a room — the left door's panes clear onto a green garden, the right door's panes switched to an even milky frost

Nobody buys French doors for privacy. You buy them because two tall panels of glass move daylight from one room into the next and keep a sightline open across the house — and that is precisely the problem the first time you want the room behind them closed. Curtains on a door that swings never hang right. Blinds rattle against the hardware. Etched or sandblasted glass is a one-way decision that quietly turns a French door into a wall. Smart glass French doors solve it without changing anything you can see: clear and open by default, evenly frosted in about a second, clear again when the room is yours to share.

Privacy without curtains on glass-paned doors

French doors are the hardest opening in the house to dress. The stiles are slim, the handles sit dead center, the doors move several times a day, and any fabric you hang has to clear the swing on both sides. Most homeowners end up with a treatment they fight, or with permanent frosting that costs them the daylight they paid for.

Switchable glass moves the privacy into the glass itself, so nothing hangs off the door. The panes are optically clear whenever they're powered, and milky-white opaque whenever they're not — which also means privacy is the fail-safe state, not something you have to remember. You switch it from a wall plate, a handheld remote, an app, a timer, or a voice assistant, and one control can drive every pane in the opening at once.

Two things stay true in both states: daylight still passes through the frosted glass, so the room goes private without going dark, and the switchable layer blocks over 99% of UV, which matters on doors that face a hot exposure.

One pane or the whole door: film per lite vs full-pane glass

This is where French doors differ from every other opening we work on, because the geometry decides the method.

True divided lites — each small pane individually glazed into a muntin grid — get smart film cut per lite. Every pane receives its own panel sized to its own opening, with the leads collected and run out through the frame. The muntins are never touched, so the traditional look survives intact and the frost stops neatly at each bar. The trade-off is honest: eight small panes take much more labor than one big one, so the panel count drives the job as much as the square footage does.

Simulated divided lites are the easier case. The grid bars are applied to the face of a single sheet of glass (or sit between panes), so behind the grille there's one continuous pane. One film panel covers the whole door, one lead run, and the frost reads evenly right across the door — visually the cleanest result of the three.

Full-lite French doors — one large pane per leaf, no grid — are the simplest of all: a single panel per door.

If you're replacing glazing or ordering new doors anyway, the better route is laminated smart glass panels that drop into the existing frames at matching footprint and thickness, with the switchable layer sealed permanently inside the glass. That's exactly what a living-room job in Los Angeles called for: the owners wanted the muntins, hardware, and divided-light proportions untouched and only the glass to change.

The rule of thumb: your doors are staying → film. You're changing the glass anyway → sealed glass panels. More on the retrofit product and its five frosted finishes on our smart film page, and on how film behaves on doors specifically in our guide to smart film for glass doors.

Glare and west-facing rooms

A wall of door glass facing west is wonderful until four in the afternoon. Because the frosted state scatters light rather than blocking it, switching the doors at the worst hour takes the hard, blinding shaft off your screen and your floors while keeping the room bright — and the frosted state cuts solar heat gain, so the room runs cooler than it would behind clear glass.

We're straight about the limits: this is glare and privacy control, not a replacement for exterior shading on a room with a genuine heat problem. The full trade-off is in our piece on switchable glass for west-facing window glare.

Real French-door installs in Los Angeles

  • Burbank home office — 29 sq ft of switchable film retrofitted onto a pair of full-lite French doors to the dining room plus the glazed kitchen door, three panes total. All of it switches together on one handheld remote, and no glass was replaced or removed.
  • Los Angeles living room — the original glazing in the French door panels was swapped for PDLC laminated smart glass of matching footprint and thickness. The muntins, hardware, and divided-light proportions stayed exactly as they were; one tap on the remote frosts every panel at once.
  • Los Angeles double doors — a set of double French doors retrofitted with switchable panels custom-cut to the existing openings, controlled from a wall switch, so the doors needed no blinds or curtains at all.

More switchable work across the region is on our Los Angeles County page.

What switchable French doors cost

Two things set the number: how many separate panes have to be switched, and whether you're keeping the existing glass or replacing it. A pair of full-lite doors is a small job. The same doors in a ten-lite colonial grid is the same square footage and considerably more work, because each pane is its own panel, its own cut, and its own connection.

As a starting point, a small switchable panel starts around $1,500 fully installed and scales with size. Retrofit film on glass you're keeping is the lower-cost path; laminated replacement panels cost more and buy you a sealed unit. The honest breakdown of both, side by side, is on our smart glass cost page.

Frequently asked questions

Do both doors switch together, or can I control them separately?
Either way. Wired to one circuit, every pane in the pair frosts at the same instant — on a Burbank home-office job we put both French doors and a separate kitchen door on a single handheld remote. If you want one leaf independent, we run it as its own channel and give you a second switch or remote button.
Does smart film work on small French door panes?
Usually yes. Each lite gets its own panel cut to that opening, with a narrow margin at one edge for the electrical connection. Very small colonial-style panes are worth reviewing from photos first — we'll tell you honestly whether the geometry works before you commit. Price tracks the number of panes more than the total square footage.
Can you do the sidelights and transom above the doors too?
Yes. Sidelights, transoms, and the glazed door next to them are the same product and the same controls, and they usually go on the same switch as the doors so the whole opening changes state together.
Will the muntins and grid bars still show?
Yes — nothing about the door changes visually. The switchable layer lives in the plane of the glass, so the bars, hardware, and proportions read exactly as they did. On simulated-divided-lite doors, one continuous panel sits behind the whole grille and the frost reads evenly across it.
What happens during a power outage?
The doors go frosted. Privacy is the unpowered state, so an outage leaves the room private rather than exposed. The doors themselves still swing and latch normally — switchable glass adds nothing to the hinges, handles, or jambs.
Can this go on exterior French doors that open to a patio?
Yes. Retrofit film is applied to the interior face of the glass, out of the weather entirely. If you're replacing the glazing or ordering new doors, laminated smart glass panels seal the switchable layer inside the glass, which is the sturdier choice for a door that takes sun and rain.

I had a great experience working with SMART VIEW Smart Glass & Film Solutions. A co‑worker recommended them after having her living room and kitchen done, and once I saw the video of her results, I knew I wanted the same. Getting privacy film installed on my windows turned out to be an excellent investment. It looks amazing, gives me the privacy I wanted, and I love that I no longer need curtains collecting dust. The office team was friendly and easy to work with, and the installation crew was professional, efficient, and very respectful of my home. I highly recommend their service.
