What Size Transformer Does Your Smart Film Need?

Illustration of a compact smart film transformer power supply concealed inside a cabinet compartment beside an interior switchable smart film partition, one pane frosted an even milky white and one clear

What size transformer your smart film needs comes down to one number: the square footage of film it has to drive. Every watt of capacity covers about one and a half square feet, so add up the glass area on each switching zone and pick the unit whose rating clears the total. One transformer per zone.

Why Square Footage Decides Everything

A PDLC layer is an electrical load spread evenly across the pane. The film itself is frugal — it draws no more than five watts per square meter while it is held clear, and nothing at all while frosted — but the transformer has to feed every square foot on its circuit at once, so its capacity scales with area. That is why each unit in the smart glass transformers lineup is rated by the film area it covers: ten models from 15 to 500 watts, spanning roughly 23 to 769 square feet, every one outputting the same 60V AC and shipping with its receiver and remote included. The full lineup and current pricing live on that page; what follows is how to read it.

What the film's small draw means for the electricity bill is a separate topic — our smart film power consumption guide runs that math. For sizing, the takeaway is simpler: capacity is about coverage, not running cost.

The Sizing Math, Worked Through

Measure each pane that will switch together — width times height, in feet — and add the areas into one total per zone. Then set that total against the lineup's "covers up to" ratings and take the first model that clears it. Three common shapes show how it lands:

  • A bathroom window, about 15 square feet. The 15-watt unit covers up to 23 square feet, so the smallest model in the lineup handles it with headroom to spare.
  • A conference-room glass wall, about 120 square feet. That total passes the 50-watt unit's 76-square-foot ceiling, so it takes the 100-watt model, rated to 153 square feet.
  • A storefront run, about 250 square feet. The 200-watt unit is rated to 307 square feet — one unit does it, provided the whole run switches together as a single zone.

When a total falls between two models, round up, never down. The larger unit costs a little more once; an undersized one gets replaced.

How Many Transformers Does One Project Take?

One per switching zone — and a zone is simply everything you want to change at the same moment. A bathroom window and an office partition that should frost independently are two zones and two transformers, even if a single big unit could carry the combined area on paper. A wall of four panels that always switches as one surface is one zone and one unit.

Zones are also where the control choices attach. Every unit pairs with its included remote, and the dimmable 100-watt and 200-watt models add a wall switch with variable opacity control, letting that zone hold any state between clear and frosted. If one room deserves dimming and the rest are simple on and off, only that room's zone needs the dimmable unit.

Voltage: Match the Label, Every Time

Our transformers all output 60V AC from standard household power, which matches the 48–65V operating rating of the film we install. Other manufacturers build film for 24, 36, 48, or 65 volts, and the numbers are not interchangeable — the rated voltage is printed on the panel's edge label or on the existing driver's enclosure, and a replacement has to match it. Replacing a unit on film we did not install? Send us a photo of that label and we will tell you exactly what fits.

Where the Transformer Ends Up

Concealed — in the wall cavity, above the ceiling, or inside a nearby cabinet, with the low-voltage wiring hidden inside the frame. You see glass and a switch, nothing else. Placement is planned during the install, so the unit stays reachable for service without opening a wall.

The Warning Signs of a Wrong-Size Unit

An undersized transformer announces itself: the glass switches slowly, the unit hums under load, and the constant strain wears it out early. An oversized one fails differently — nothing breaks, the glass switches normally, you simply paid for capacity the film can never use. Both are avoidable with the same square-footage math above, which is why we confirm the sizing during the pre-install site survey on every job rather than guessing from a phone call.

Replacing a Transformer on an Existing System

When switchable glass stops switching, the transformer is the most common culprit and usually the cheapest fix. Diagnosis comes first — our Gauzy smart glass transformer guide walks through the failure modes worth checking before buying anything. The fix itself is routine: on a hospital conference room transformer fix in Westlake Village, four failed units on another installer's system were replaced with matched-spec ones in a single service visit — without touching the film, the glass, or the wiring.

We supply replacement transformers for any brand's film — with an install, on their own, or as part of a material-only order shipped nationwide through our buy smart glass page. Voltage and wattage both come off your label, so that photo is the only homework.

Transformer Sizing Questions, Answered

Can one large transformer run every panel in the house?

Only if everything is meant to switch together. Panels that should frost independently sit on separate zones, and each zone needs its own correctly sized unit. Total wattage is not the constraint — the circuit layout is.

What voltage do smart film transformers put out?

Ours output 60V AC, matching the 48–65V rating of the film we install. Other brands run on 24, 36, 48, or 65 volts, so a replacement must match the voltage printed on your panel or driver label — send us the label and we will confirm what fits.

Where does the transformer go — will I see it?

No. It mounts concealed in the wall cavity, ceiling, or a nearby cabinet, with the low-voltage wiring hidden inside the frame. The visible parts of the system are the glass and the switch.

What happens if the transformer is too small?

The film still switches, badly: the change slows down, the unit hums under the load, and it wears out well before its time. If an existing system shows those symptoms, resizing the unit — not replacing the film — is usually the fix.

I had a great experience working with SMART VIEW Smart Glass & Film Solutions. A co‑worker recommended them after having her living room and kitchen done, and once I saw the video of her results, I knew I wanted the same. Getting privacy film installed on my windows turned out to be an excellent investment. It looks amazing, gives me the privacy I wanted, and I love that I no longer need curtains collecting dust. The office team was friendly and easy to work with, and the installation crew was professional, efficient, and very respectful of my home. I highly recommend their service.
