Electric Privacy Glass for Bathrooms: What Works in LA
Electric privacy glass for bathrooms comes in two forms: PDLC smart film bonded to the window you already have, or a new laminated panel with the same switchable layer sealed inside the glass. Both turn from clear to an even white frost in under a second from a wall switch or remote. Film suits most bathroom windows; sealed panels go where water hits the glass.
That split covers almost every bathroom we see in Los Angeles: a window over the tub that faces a neighbor's second story, a vanity window on the street side, glass in or beside the shower, or an interior opening that borrows daylight from the bedroom. Where the glass sits, and whether it is staying, decides the product.
Bathroom window vs shower: which product goes where
Blinds and shades sit in humidity all day, warp, spot and collect grime, and etched glass solves the sightline by giving up the view for good. Switchable glass keeps both: clear for the view and the daylight, frosted the moment you want the room to yourself. The real question is which form belongs on which pane.
- Window over a tub, vanity or WC: film on the interior face of the existing glass. It is out of the spray, and everyday steam is a normal operating condition.
- Shower door, screen or enclosure panel that takes daily spray: a sealed laminated panel. Constant water at the edges of surface film breaks down the bond and the wiring, so here the switchable layer belongs inside the glass.
- Textured, etched or heavily tinted glass: a laminated panel. Film needs a smooth, flat surface to bond to.
- Interior window between the bath and the bedroom: either works. If the opening needs new glass anyway, a panel is the cleaner job.

New laminated panel or film on the glass you have
Film on the glass you have is the default for a bathroom window. The film is cut to the pane, applied dry to the room-side face, and wired at low voltage, so a finished bathroom stays finished. On a Newport Beach master bath, that meant 102 sq ft of switchable film across a nine-lite black steel window wall behind a freestanding tub. All nine lites frost together from one handheld remote, the steel frame and marble were never touched, and the job took two days on site.
A new laminated panel is the right call when the glass is being replaced, when the pane is textured, or when it lives somewhere film should not. In a West Hollywood master bath, an interior window above a drop-in tub looked straight into the bedroom. We set a 17 sq ft smart glass panel, with the PDLC layer laminated inside, into the existing marble-lined reveal on four stainless clamps. One wall switch on the bedroom side turns it solid white, and it lives in steam every day.

Moisture, steam and cleaning: what holds up
Steam is not the enemy; standing water is. On a window's interior face, a hot shower fogging the room is normal use for the film. Trouble starts when water sprays straight onto the glass every day or pools at the edges where the electrical connections sit. That is why shower doors and screens get sealed panels, and why we check where the spray lands before quoting a shower-side window.
Cleaning is simple. Use a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, non-ammonia glass cleaner, and never soak the edges. Skip ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads and paper towels, which can scratch the film over time. There is no fabric to launder and no cord to tangle over a tub.
Will the frost really keep you private at night?
Yes, and night is where switchable frost beats every half-measure. Lit from inside after dark, ordinary clear glass turns a bathroom into a display case. The frost scatters light instead of passing an image, so from outside a frosted bathroom window reads as a softly glowing panel, with no silhouette or detail at any normal distance.
The frost is not blackout: light still passes, which keeps the room bright all day. And PDLC fails in the private direction. Questions homeowners ask before choosing
Does a steamy bathroom rule out retrofit film?
No. On a window's interior face, out of direct water spray, everyday steam and humidity are normal operating conditions for the film. The one place we route you to a sealed panel instead is glass that gets hit by water directly, like a shower screen.
Can smart film go over glass that is already frosted or textured?
No. The film needs a smooth, flat, clean surface to bond to, so etched or textured panes cannot be retrofitted. The upgrade path is replacing that pane with a laminated switchable panel, which turns always-obscured glass into glass you can switch clear.
How much does it cost to install smart glass in a bathroom?
