What Is PDLC Smart Film?

PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. Smart film contains microscopic liquid crystal droplets suspended in a polymer matrix. When electricity flows through the film (60V AC), the crystals align and the surface turns clear. When the power is off, the crystals scatter light, creating an opaque frosted appearance.

Unlike static frosted window film from a hardware store, PDLC smart film is switchable on demand -- you control when your glass is clear and when it's fully private. It also blocks the majority of UV and cuts solar heat gain by up to ~35%, taking the edge off LA's afternoon sun and your cooling bill.

It applies to the interior of your existing glass with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and needs no changes to the window frame -- ideal for rentals, historic buildings, and any space where replacing the window isn't practical or permitted.

The Smart Film Installation Process

Every Smart View smart film project follows a precise five-step process:

Step 1: Site Assessment We visit your property to measure all glass surfaces, evaluate electrical access points, and discuss your privacy and automation goals. For commercial projects, we coordinate with building management to review access schedules and any building-specific requirements.

Step 2: Custom Fabrication Every panel is cut to your exact glass dimensions at our Canoga Park facility, with busbars (the copper current strips) factory-applied and tested before leaving the shop. No generic rolls trimmed on-site -- each panel is precision-cut to spec.

Step 3: Surface Preparation We clean and prep the glass surface to remove any contaminants that could affect adhesion. This step is critical for long-term performance -- improper prep is the most common reason smart film fails prematurely. In coastal areas, salt residue requires additional treatment steps.

Step 4: Film Application and Wiring The film goes on the interior glass using a wet-installation method, so we can position it precisely before the adhesive sets. Busbars connect to low-voltage wiring (60V AC) running to a concealed transformer, hidden in the frame or wall cavity -- no exposed cables.

Step 5: Calibration and Testing Every panel is tested for switching speed, optical clarity, uniform opacity, and voltage balance. We verify integration with your control system (wall switch, remote, app, or voice assistant) and walk you through daily operation.

Typical timeline: 1-3 days for residential projects, 1-2 weeks for commercial installations depending on scope.

Residential Smart Film Applications in Los Angeles

Smart film solves a common LA problem: large windows designed for natural light and views that also expose your interior to neighbors, street traffic, and harsh afternoon sun.

In LA, the same window that frames your view also frames your living room for the whole street. Smart film lets you keep the light and take back the privacy -- on demand.— Smart View install crew

Bathrooms and shower enclosures -- Replace blinds in wet environments. Smart film on shower glass provides privacy on demand without trapping moisture the way curtains do.

Bedroom windows -- Instant privacy at night without permanently blocking daytime light. Pairs with blackout mode for sleep.

Home offices -- Create a private workspace for video calls without dedicated window treatments.

Street-facing ground-floor units -- Apartments and condos along busy streets gain instant privacy while preserving natural light flow.

Sliding glass doors and patio enclosures -- Large glass surfaces that are impractical to cover with traditional blinds.

Sliding doors and patios, private on command

French doors and sliders onto a patio or pool are exactly the glass that blinds can't handle gracefully. Smart film leaves them clear for the indoor-outdoor flow LA homes are built around, then frosts the whole run with one tap when the yard fills up or the sun drops -- no rattling vertical blinds, no curtains across the doors.

Commercial Smart Film Applications in Los Angeles

LA's commercial market drives significant smart film demand across multiple industries:

Corporate conference rooms -- Privacy on demand for meetings without permanent frosted glass. Switch to clear between meetings to maintain an open office feel.

Medical and dental offices -- HIPAA physical safeguard compliance for patient-visible treatment areas and consultation rooms.

Restaurants and hospitality -- Private dining partitions that open up for large events. VIP areas in nightlife venues.

Retail storefronts -- Switchable display windows for product reveals, after-hours privacy, or branded projection surfaces (opaque film doubles as a rear-projection screen).

Recording studios and production facilities -- Control room observation windows with instant privacy during sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a typical smart film installation take for a Los Angeles home or office?
Most residential installations (3-5 windows) are completed in one day. Larger homes with 10+ panels typically take 2-3 days. Commercial projects involving multiple conference rooms or an entire floor of offices take 1-2 weeks depending on electrical coordination and building access schedules. We schedule installations around your availability and, for commercial spaces, coordinate after-hours work if needed to minimize disruption.
Can smart film be removed later without damaging the glass?
Yes. PDLC smart film is applied with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that can be professionally removed without scratching, etching, or permanently altering the glass surface. This makes smart film particularly well-suited for renters, tenants in commercial leases, and anyone who may want to change their setup in the future. Removal typically takes less time than installation.
What is the difference between PDLC smart film and static privacy window film from a hardware store?
Static privacy film (frosted film, decorative film) is permanently opaque or patterned -- it cannot switch between clear and private. PDLC smart film is electrically switchable, changing from transparent to opaque in under one second. It also blocks 99%+ of UV rays and reduces solar heat gain, providing functional benefits beyond privacy. Static film costs $5-15/sqft but offers no switchability. PDLC smart film costs more but replaces the need for blinds, curtains, and separate UV-blocking treatments.
Does smart film work with smart home systems like Alexa, Google Home, or Lutron?
Yes. Smart View integrates smart film with all major home automation platforms. For basic setups, we connect to a wall switch or wireless remote. For smart home integration, we wire through a relay that connects to your existing Lutron, Savant, Crestron, or Control4 system. Voice control via Alexa or Google Home works through these platforms. We also offer app-based control for standalone installations without a full home automation system.
How much electricity does smart film use?
Smart film consumes approximately 5 watts per square meter in the clear (on) state. A typical bathroom window uses less power than an LED light bulb. In the opaque (off) state, the film consumes zero electricity -- privacy is the default when power is disconnected. Most homeowners see no measurable impact on their electricity bill.
