Project Overview

This smart glass sliding door in Camarillo faces a lake. The slider is the widest piece of glass in the room and the water sits directly beyond it, which is the reason the furniture points that way and the reason the room has never had a good way to close itself off — anything hung over that door to gain privacy takes the lake with it. In 2026, Smart View retrofitted switchable smart glass film (PDLC) onto the door’s existing glass — 54 sq ft of it — so the whole slider turns from crystal clear to solid frosted on a wall switch or a handheld remote, without a single panel leaving its frame.

Inside the Camarillo Build

The Problem: A Sliding Door You Cannot Curtain Off

A lakeside slider is exposed in a way an ordinary window is not. It is the largest opening in the room, it faces the side of the house where people actually walk, and glass carries a view in both directions — after dark, with the lights on inside, the room becomes the brightest thing on that shoreline. The privacy problem shows up at exactly the hours the room is used most.

The standard answers all cost something. Vertical blinds over a slider park a stack of fabric across the opening for the rest of the day and rattle every time the door moves. A curtain does the same in softer form, and on a door that gets used constantly it ends up pushed aside, gathering dust and hiding a third of the glass permanently. Etching or a fixed frosted panel solves privacy in one move and deletes the lake with it.

Retrofitting smart glass film avoided the trade entirely. Smart glass film is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to glass that is already hanging in its frame. With power on, the crystals line up and the panel is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost you cannot see shapes through. Light still passes through the frost, so closing the door off does not turn the room dark — it stops being see-through, not bright. And because the film goes onto the door that is already installed, nothing was ordered from a glass shop, nothing was craned in, and the slider kept working the way the family already knew it.

Switch by the Door, Remote on the Table

Most of the day the glass lives clear and the room keeps the whole lake. In the evening, or any time the patio side of the house is busy, one press takes all 54 sq ft to frost at once, and one more press brings the water back. The wall switch sits where a light switch sits, so anyone in the house works it without being taught — no explaining, no app. The handheld remote covers the other half of how the room is used: frosting the door from the dinner table or the couch while guests are on the patio, without crossing the room to do it.
