Specifying smart glass for architectural projects comes down to four decisions made early: whether the glazing arrives switchable from the factory or gets film applied on site, where the low-voltage power lands, how the panels are zoned and controlled, and who sets the panel sizes. Panel or Film? The Route Decision Comes First
A drawing set can call for glass that turns private in two ways, and they lead to different suppliers, budgets, and construction sequences.
The first is a factory-laminated panel. The switchable layer is sealed between two sheets of glass at the fabricator, so what lands on site is a finished unit with a wire tail. A glazier sets it like any other panel and never touches the switchable layer. The second is switchable smart film, bonded to the room-side face of glass that is already in its frame, or of standard glazing ordered from your usual supplier. Nothing is fabricated to order, so the schedule does not hinge on a glass lead time, and an opening can be converted long after the glazing package has closed. Film belongs on dry interior faces.
Most projects end up mixing both. Wet rooms and exposed exterior openings take panels; interior partitions, borrowed-light windows, and glazed doors take film.
What Belongs in the Drawing Set
A switchable pane is an ordinary piece of glass with two extra requirements: it needs power, and somebody downstream needs to know which panels do what. Five notes cover almost every project:
- A switch schedule. Tag every panel that switches and group it into a zone. "All four bays together" and "each bay on its own" are different jobs, and the difference is invisible once the glass is in.
- A power provision at each opening. A low-voltage feed reaching the head or jamb of every switching panel, concealed in the framing.
- A driver location with access. The compact low-voltage driver sits above a ceiling, in a millwork void, or inside a bulkhead. It needs a reachable spot, not a sealed one.
- The control and where it lives. A wall plate beside the light switches, a handheld remote, or a relay into the building control system.
- Which face carries the film. On the retrofit route, name the interior surface so the finish schedule and the glazier agree before anyone is on site.
Nothing penetrates the glass itself, and the electrical load rarely troubles a panel schedule. What changes is the wall behind the glass — which is why this belongs on the drawings, not on a punch list.
Where Does the Power Actually Land?
Each switching panel runs from a low-voltage driver rather than from a socket at the glass. In practice the electrician or general contractor delivers a circuit and a concealed route to the opening, and our crew terminates the driver and the panels — the same division of labor as a light fixture, hidden in the wall.
One behavior is worth writing on the drawings so that nobody designs around the wrong assumption: power holds the glass clear, so the unpowered state is frosted. Cut the supply and a glazed conference wall goes private on its own. That is the fail-safe direction most clients want, and it means a power failure is a privacy event rather than an exposure event.
On a retrofit into a finished space, the route is the whole design problem. A ceiling void or a hollow mullion hides it completely; a solid plaster wall and a wood floor turn it into a choice between a short surface raceway and a small patched section of ceiling. How Big Can a Single Panel Be?
Film is manufactured in roll widths, so a run wider than one sheet carries a join. The join is findable up close, which is why we place it on a mullion or a transom where it reads as part of the frame rather than as a seam across open glass. Factory-laminated panels have their own maximum sizes, set by the fabricator and quoted per project.
Zoning deserves the same attention. On a Manhattan Beach residence we converted four separate openings — three tall street-facing living-room windows plus the sidelight beside the entry door, 40 sq ft of glass in total — and wired them as two independent zones on a single wireless remote. The living-room bank switches together; the sidelight keeps its own control, because a front door and a living room want privacy at different moments. That grouping was a design decision made before anything was cut, not a wiring accident discovered afterwards.

What Switchable Glazing Will Not Do for a Design
The limits matter more to a specifier than to anyone else — these are the questions a consultant will ask:
- Frost is privacy, not blackout. The opaque state stops the glass being see-through, not bright — daylight still passes. A bedroom or a screening room that needs darkness still needs a blackout shade behind the glass.
- It is not an acoustic measure. The glass changes what people see, never what they hear. Sound stays a question for the glazing build-up and the partition detail.
- We make no thermal or solar-performance claim for the film. The manufacturer's spec sheets are available on request if a consultant needs the material data for a submittal.
- Texture and curvature rule the film out. Patterned, sandblasted, or curved glazing cannot take a flat applied layer; that opening is a laminated-panel conversation instead.
- The frosted state is one appearance. An even milky white, not a palette choice.
